Traditional Filipino Folk Dances

Oct. 26 at 2:45PM Tinikling & 4:45PM Malong
Oct. 27 at 4:45PM Sakuting

Duration: Approximately 45 minutes
TINIKLING:  a traditional Philippine folk dance which originated prior to Spanish colonialism. The dance involves at least two people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance.
MALONG: a traditional Filipino dance that demonstrates the many ways to wear a malong, a traditional garment — as a shawl, as a mantle, and as a head piece. The dance originated with the Maranao tribes of Mindanao, Philippines.
SAKUTING: a traditional Filipino folk dance that portrays a mock fight using sticks. A sakuting stick is striped or bamboo, is about 1½ feet long, and tapered at the end, like a candle. Its original use was for combat training.

Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) refers to the traditional martial arts from the Philippines. It encompasses various systems and styles, the most prominent being Eskrima, Arnis, and Kali. FMA is known for its focus on weapon-based combat though it also includes empty-hand techniques. FMA has a rich history tied to warfare and resistance to colonization. The styles were influenced by indigenous Filipino combat traditions as well as interactions with foreign invaders such as the Spanish.
